GDP growth of OECD member countries has continuously been on decline and advanced economies are expected to see relatively flat growth in the coming years. Today, many people believe that the Fourth Industrial Revolution should create value and new industries through interconnections between physical systems and digital data and it is expected to reshape the economic, social and cultural context in which we live.
In Japan we have started a Japanese version of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the so-called “Society 5.0”. Through joint efforts of the public and private sectors as well as academia, many difficulties on the social agenda are being tackled. However, we also have to understand both the light and the shadow sides of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in a deeper way. Unless many hurdles are overcome through real global collaboration, Mr. Koizumi believes that many innovative new ideas would be swept away or realized only with serious negative by-effects.
Today technical innovation is progressing at dizzying speed, and industry, government and academia across the globe should cooperatively and sincerely explore necessary action programs corresponding to disruptive changes of the new digital era so that we can establish a stable, sustainable and inclusive development of our society.
Mr. Shinichi Koizumi was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1948. He received Bachelor Degree in Economics from Keio University in 1971.
